Calling 9th, 10th and 11th grade African American Young Women:
Southeastern San Diego Women, Incorporated wants to inspire, encourage, mentor and motivate you towards higher education and positive life choices. Please sign-up with Mrs. Hubbard in room 548 by Monday, Jan 30th if you are interested in being a part of a wonderful young woman’s group. You must be willing to commit to a gathering once a month after school beginning February 1st.
Teens for Jeans Update
We are now excepting denim capris and shorts as part of the contest. Here are the top three classes:

Fletcher – 9
Please remember to call ext. 2146 at the beginning of period 4 or email dcamacho@sandi.net for a pick with the number of jeans collected – so we can bring the coupons to give to the students who donated. The contest ends on Feb. 10 – so please continue to bring in your old or new denim jeans, shorts, or capris. The first class to get to 100 gets a pizza party. Every 4th period class that gets to 150 will have an ice cream social.
Library Closed on Jan. 31
The library will be closed periods 1 – 6 on Tuesday, January 31. Adults who need access to the library can enter through the textbook room door (opposite the tennis courts). Please don’t send students; I will be issuing textbooks and unable to help them. The library will be open before and after school as usual. Thank you – Ms. Denton
Southeast Explorers Leadership Retreats – February to May 2012
A series of once a month outdoor activities, that focus on cultivating leadership, raising awareness around community building and environmental concerns. This series includes trips to Julian, Mission Trails, Sunset Cliffs, rock climbing and a ropes course. An SEE Application is required (deadline had been extended to 02/02/2012). Film Youth Voices Workshop & Film Festival – February to June 2012
A 15 week long workshop series with Media Arts Center designed for youth to create digital stories and short documentary films centered around the themes: “Who I Am” and “Where I Am From”. The workshops series will culminate in a youth film festival on June 22nd. An FYV Application ((deadline had been extended to 02/02/2012 ) & interview is required. Friday Movie Night Series – January to May 2012
A five month long movie night series for high school and college age youth. There will be dinner and a movie followed by an interactive discussion. The purpose of the event is to help youth connect while providing a space to help them think critically about the images and messages present in the films they watch. Finals This Week
This Thursday and Friday are Semester one finals. School will get out on both days at 11:28 a.m. On Thursday, students will take periods 1, 2, and 3 finals. On Friday, students will take periods 4, 5, and 6 finals.

4 Elements of Hip Hop in February
Writerz Blok and Malcolm X Library will be putting on 4 Elements of Hip Hop in February. Feb. 1 – Aerosol Art, Feb. 8 – 2 Turntables + MCing, Feb. 15 – B-Boying, and Feb. 22 – All 4 Elements Mix. Each class is from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The classes will take place at Malcolm X Library located at 5148 Market Street. Japan Trip Update
Lincoln students who are planning to go on the Asia trip to Japan and Korea, need to pay their deposit of $95 by January 19. After January 19, the price for this trip will increase more than $200, as well as the deposit to enroll. Please see either Ms. Profit in room 373 or Mrs. Cooper to make payments. Fundraisers will be done to help with cost, so, don’t miss out on a great opportunity because of cost.
Lincoln A.S.B. needs your Blue Jeans! – Period 4 Contest
All period 4 teachers and classes will be able to help Lincoln High, who has entered the 5th Annual Teens for Jeans Campaign sponsored by Aeropostale and DoSomething.org Bring your used jeans to school and get a coupon for a discount on a new pair of jeans from Aeropostale. All jeans donated will go to either homeless teens or areas affected by natural disasters. The school with the most jeans collected will win $5,000 and a pair of jeans for every student, plus a celebration. Each class that collects 150 pairs of jeans will receive an ice cream celebration, as well as a prize that gets to 100 jeans (Pizza Party). A memo was placed in your mailbox, if you did not get one, please call ext. 2146 during 4th period. Good luck to all classes
APEX Credit Recovery Students
The semester is ending soon. Please remember to work on APEX as often as possible. There will be a “Finish Your APEX” Saturday School on January 21, in Ms. Holman’s room 472.
Seniors – FAFSA Help
Please come to room 654 (East Side of campus) or 468 (West Side of campus) on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday’s from 2:30 to 4:00 all this month for help with your FAFSA. This is possible free money for college, so don’t wait until the last minute – get it done now!
Lincoln High Black History Month Essay Contest
This essay contest is open to all Lincoln students, grades 9-12. The essay must be a minimum of 500 words, typed and double-spaced. In the heading please include your 4th period teacher’s name and the room number. Please write an essay in response to the following prompt: Write about the accomplishment(s) of an African American. How has this African American’s accomplishments benefited the African American community and/or global society? How is this African American a role model for young African Americans today? In an effort to expand your learning, please do not submit essays on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman or Rosa Parks. You may choose from any aspect of our community including advocates, doctors, teachers, inventors, lawyers, actress/actors, athletes, musicians, etc… A list of choices is available in Room 548 if you need ideas. The deadline is Friday, February 10, 2011. All submissions must be submitted to Mrs. Jackson-Hubbard, room 548 by 3:00 p.m. on February 10th. Cash prizes and more will be given to our winners. Black History Essay Contest
The San Diego Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sponsors an annual Black History Essay Contest to enhance students’ knowledge of contributions made by African Americans. Monetary awards will be provided in the following categories: Grades 3-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12. In each category, 1st place recipients will receive $100, 2nd place recipients will receive $75, and 3rd place recipients will receive $50. The contest is open to all students in San Diego County .
