COL (Ret) Limuel Hunter, Jr. and 1SG (Ret) Bruce Kowalski are the teachers in charge of Lincoln’s JROTC Program.

The United States Army’s Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, or JROTC, is designed to teach high school students the value of citizenship, leadership, service to the community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling in them self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline. Its focus is reflected in its mission statement, “To motivate young people to be better citizens.” JROTC prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school, and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, community and nation.

On December 10, 2011, at San Diego Unified School District Brigade Drill Competition, which was held at Madison High School, Lincoln JROTC took 1st place in the Best Drill Individual (BDI) Competition for 4th year cadets and 2nd place for Best Drill Individual for 2nd year cadets.

Canned Food Drive Needs Your Donation

Lincoln High School’s Army JROTC Battalion is sponsoring their annual food drive, which will end on December 14, 2011. The Battalion’s goal is to collect 2,000 pounds of food items, which is nearly double the 1146 pounds they collected last year. Lincoln cadets will collect donations (canned food or monetary instruments) from the local community and return these donations in the form of canned food back to its community people of need. Entities, to include individuals and businesses, desiring to participate in this worthwhile endeavor, should contact COL(Ret) Limuel Hunter, Jr. at 619-266-6500 EXT 1417, to arrange for pick up of your donation. Donations may also be dropped at Lincoln’s Central Office, 4777 Imperial Ave., San Diego, CA 92113.

Army JROTC Leadership Bowl

Lincoln JROTC cadets competed in this nation’s top leadership and academic bowl for high school students. Lincoln’s leadership team, consisting of all 1st year cadets, excelled in their performance at Level I (The Challenge) and has now moved on to Level II (Zero Hour Threat). Students benefit from participating in this free leadership competition by developing an increased “interest in college admissions,” improving their “leadership skills” and boosting “team and unit spirit.” 2012ArmyLeadershipBowl

Damage Control Training

Lincoln High School JROTC Cadets underwent annual damage control training at the San Diego Naval Base. Cadets learned how to respond rapidly to emergency situations when a ship’s hull has ruptured and compartments are being flooded. Cadets received a lecture and demonstration on the design flaws of the Titanic, which pointed out the reasons the ship sank so quickly upon impact with an iceberg. The cadets received hands-on training on how to use blocking and bracing material (dunnage) to make emergency repairs of the ship’s hull that is located below the waterline.

Veterans Invitational Drill Meet – CANCELLED

This Drill is now CANCELLED due rain in the forecast. Lincoln’s JROTC Color Guard will compete in the 10th annual Veterans Invitational Drill Meet on December 18, 2010 at Chaparral High School in Temecula, CA. This drill meet was originally scheduled for November 20, 2010, but was rescheduled due to rain.

Platoon and Squad Competition

All 13 Junior ROTC Programs in the San Diego Unified School District competed in the annual Platoon and Squad Competition at Madison High School on December 11, 2010. The competition was open to the public and it was a huge success.

JROTC Supports Diversity in the Rain

JROTC participated in the 18th Annual San Diego Heritage Day Parade on February 27, 2010. One third of battalion’s cadet members braved the cold rain to show their support for the Heritage Day platform, which is “to bridge gaps between the consumers, community organizations and businesses-small and large-with an ultimate goal of bringing economical and social revitalization to the” communities surrounding Lincoln High School.

The rain caused many of the registered participants to cancel their participation in the parade, but this was not the case for Lincoln students. Lincoln was represented by its JROTC contingency, consisting of its Color Guard with drums, Marching Unit, Armed Drill Team and Unarmed Drill Team. Additionally, Lincoln’s Drill Team, Band and Step Team participated in the parade.

Lincoln’s JROTC Color Guard was awarded the Trophy for “Best Color Guard 2010.”
