Work Permits for Summer Jobs

Work permits are available in the Career Center until Friday, June 25. Mr Loessel can sign work permits up to and including Monday, June 21.

And please note that beginning Thursday, June 17 Mr Loessel will issue blank work permits and a flyer that gives directions to the Work Permit Office off Linda Vista Rd. All students, 14 – 17 years old, must have a signed work permit to work during summer break.

There’s still time to get a summer job before the Career Center closes for SY 09/10. Visit the Career Center, talk to Mr Loessel and take a look at the Job Board. Students must have a 2.0 GPA to get their work permit signed by Mr Loessel either on or before Monday, June 21. The last day the Career Center will be opened is Friday, June 25.

The last day the Lincoln High Career Center will be opened, for SY 2009/10 is Friday, June 25. The reopening date for SY 10/11 is TBD.

Senior Exhibition Is Here

It’s that time again … Senior Exhibition and the Lincoln High seniors burning the midnight oil to get their Portfolios ready and practice their Presentations.

Senior Exhibition is scheduled for Wednesday, May 26 from 12:pm to 3:30pm. That will be a minimum day for the rest of Lincoln High with the afternoon devoted to Senior Exhibition.

Seniors must pass Senior Exhibition to be eligible to graduate. They must present a Portfolio that is evaluated for appropriate content and completeness and give a 5 -7 minute oral presentation.

This can be a stress filled yet exhilirating time for Lincoln High seniors as they move one-step closer to graduation on June 18th.

Senior Exhibition Presentation Workshop

Beginning Wednesday, April 14 from 2:45 – 3:15 pm the Career Center will be the location of the Senior Exhibition Presentation Workshop. Mr Loessel will be the facilitator. This Workshop is open to all seniors interested in learning the step-by-step techniques of giving a dynamic 5 – 7 minute oral presentation. Students will also learn the appropriate dress and what it means to be ‘dressed for success’.

This Workshop will continue every Wednesday, at the same time and location, concluding on Wednesday, 19 May.

Are You Ready To Be Employed?

When a student visits the Career Center, interested in getting a part time job, Mr Loessel will ask them to sit down and then ask “Why should an employer hire you”? In most cases the student is not sure why they should be hired. In fairness they may not be ready for that question. But it’s important they know what to say. It’s important that the student knows why the employer should hire them instead of somehow else … especially the person they interviewed maybe an hour ago. Why should the employer offer them a job? There should be no hesitation when a student’s asked that question. Some students will sit there a few minutes and wonder what to say. In the actual interview such uncertainty could lead to no job offer. The student is wasting their time and the employer’s.

On the contrary, a student ready for employment knows what skills their bringing to the position. They will share those skills during the interview. There will be no hesitation. They will speak with confidence knowing they are the best person for the position. The employer will hear the confidence and will want them on their team. The student will also ask for the job to indicate to the employer they are ready to be employed. And in most cases students who are ready for employment, get the job offer and stay employed through the entire school year.

Mr Loessel is available, in the Career Center, to assist students in preparing for interviews.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY SALUTE TO EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

A college bound graduating senior can be nominated in one of 16 career categories such as: Arts, Athletics, Computer Science Tech, Mathematics, Performing Arts, Science, Vocational/Technical.

Deadline date = 02/19/10

JAPANESE AMERICAN CITIZENS LEAGUE

Every graduating senior must be an active JACL member to apply. Applicants must be planning to attend a college, university, trade school, or business school.

Deadline date = 03/01/10

SAN DIEGO COUNTY CITIZENS’ SCHOLARSHIP

Student must be a graduating San Diego City/Country High School Senior to apply. It is important that the student shows a financial need.

Deadline date = 03/02/10

SAN DIEGO MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

This scholarship is for graduating high school seniors in the San Diego City Schools/San Diego Unified School District. The Scholarship must be used at a four-year, fully accredited college/university.

Deadline date = 03/05/10

REWARDING COLLEGE DREAMS SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is offered through Cal-SOAP for a graduating high school senior who plans to attend a community college or four-year college/university.

Deadline date = 03/15/10

Mock Interviews

The Career Center offers MOCK INTERVIEWS to help prepare students for job interviews or … any on or off campus activity that requires an interview. The mock interview introduces the student to the importance of good posture, the appropriate body language and hand gestures and how to respond to questions that involve more then a yes or no response.

During a mock interview the student learns the value of good communication skills, showing confidence and dressing appropriately to make that good first impression. It doesn’t matter the grade level all students can benefit from a mock interview.

The Job Board is Student Friendly

The JOB BOARD, located in the Career Center, is updated at least once a month. The JOB BOARD is student friendly and offers part time employment opportunities for students to view. A majority of the jobs are for students 16 and older but some small business owners will consider hiring students ages 14-15.

Please note …

Typically entry-level employment is available at many fastfood places (Pat & Oscar’s, KFC, In-N-Out Burger, and McDonald’s), retail stores (check the listing for Fashion Valley) and supermarkets such as Vons and Ralphs that use on-line applications. And an on-line applications means the student must first fill-out the on-line application then visit the store, talk to the hiring manager and schedule an interview. Just filling out the on-line application is not enough.

Additionally all students, ages 14 – 17, must have a valid work permit issued by Mr Loessel. Students ages 16-17 can work until 10:pm and 14-15 year olds can work until 7:pm.

CAL-SOAP Reps Have Returned

California Student Opportunity and Access Program (CAL-SOAP) Reps Ngozi Okeh and Aida Jaramillo are now on campus ready to assist students with college admission and financial aid information. They will be on campus Tuesday and Thursday from 8:am – 1:pm in the Career Center (room 107).

Ngozi is a 2nd year pre-law student at UCSD and plans to pursue a career in family law. Aida is a graduate student at Chapman University and she has a BA from UCLA.

Grade levels assigned -

Please note that Ngozi has been assigned to work with 10th and 12th graders and Aida will work with 9th and 11th graders.
