A special thanks goes out to the Caterpillar African American Network at Solar Turbines for supporting our First Robotics Team. They generously contributed $6,500.00. We would also like to thank Northrop Grumman for contributing $1,500.00 to support our team.

Our Robotics Team will continue to meet on Wednesdays after school in room 432. Mr. Navarro is the Robotics coach. He can be contacted at rnavarro@sandi.net.

Lincoln High student Sakeenah Shabazz was quietly sitting in 4th period government class this week when some strangers entered her classroom. And handed Sakeenah $10,000. The Lincoln senior had just won a Nordstrom Scholarship Award, one of only 40 in the nation. Sakeenah currently ranks first in her class, with a GPA above a perfect 4.0. “She is the consummate student with an unwavering commitment to Lincoln High School and the Southeastern San Diego community,” said Vice Principal Joe Wiseman. Her scholarship will be paid in installments over four years of college, and is part of a program rewarding high-achieving and hard-working students since 1993.

Ruben surprised Johanna on live TV while she was in her AP Calculus class and presented her with a trophy and a few other prizes. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Bacon, Mr. Souvannarath, Mr. Pascua, Ms. Frankenberg, Mr. Morgan, and Mr. Rubin for coming to school extra early to show support for our amazing student. Our senior cheerleaders also did an amazing job in helping make the event a special one for Johanna.

Lincoln High School Science Department Proudly Presents: 2nd Annual- Nifty 150 Science Lecture

When: March 10th @ 9:30am

Where: Lincoln High School Theatre

Who: FRANCISCO J. VILLARREAL, MD PhD, Professor of Medicine

Major areas of research include:

A) The effects that abnormal patterns of cardiac contraction have on myocardial inflammation and remodeling,

B) The cardioprotective effects of novel matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors (MMPi),

C) The cardioprotective actions of cocoa flavanols and,

D) The role that extracellular matrix deposition plays in the development of diastolic dysfunction in diabetic hearts.

Details on the cocoa flavanol project is as follows:

Dr. Villarreal’s laboratory has undertaken a project related to the characterization of the cardioprotective actions of cocoa flavanols on animal models of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Epidemiological studies have shown a correlation between flavonoid-rich diets and improved cardiovascular prognosis. Cocoa contains large amounts of flavonoids, in particular flavanols (mostly catechins and epicatechins). Flavonoids possess pleiotropic properties that may confer protective effects to tissues during injury. We examined the ability of epicatechin to reduce short and long-term ischemia reperfusion (IR) myocardial injury. Our results indicate that epicatechin Tx confers cardioprotection in the setting of IR injury. The effects are independent of changes in hemodynamics, are sustained over the long-term, and are accompanied by reduced levels of indicators of tissue injury. Results warrant the evaluation of cocoa flavanols as possible therapeutic agents to limit ischemic injury.

Basically… he is trying to prove the health benefits of Chocolate- It really CAN be good for you and your cardiovascular (heart) health! J

Please join us for this fascinating lecture!

Please RSVP you and your students to Mrs. Ogo by March 8th

On February 21st, The Center for Science and Engineering celebrated Engineering Week with an outstanding classroom activity. Our business partner, Raytheon of San Diego delivered a hands-on lesson around the field of engineering by four of their chief professionals.Organized by Mr. Kevin Stiemke, a Raytheon Engineer, he was accompanied by Mr. Godfrey Duke, Mr. Jonathan Gacad, and a Lincoln High Alumni, Ms. Veronica Powell.Students were given an overview of the engineering industry and the through the eyes of Raytheon as well as an overview of their company. After which students gathered into competitive teams as engineers who then created a rubber band-powered car that would stand the rigors of a race. The class was bursting with excitement as students witnessed their prototype moving about the room.More that 65 students from Mr. Bloom’s Introduction to Engineering class and Mr. Bogan’s Engineering, Design & Development class participated in this celebration of engineering. Our students were privileged to interact with these outstanding industry professionals and gain a broader view of the implications engineering will have on their future list of possibilities.
