Please join the Old Globe Theater for a reading of Emancipated, a new, one-act play written by four young adults whose lives have been shaped by the experiences they had growing up as foster children. From their tragic home lives to their roller coaster ride through foster and group homes, social workers and the court system to emancipation at age 18, they tell their stories with the humor and pathos that only those who have lived it can evoke.

Emancipated will be performed on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2:00 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre at Lincoln High School Center for the Arts.

Following the readings, the playwrights will conduct a forum to discuss their experiences. Admission is free, but reservations are suggested.

To RSVP, https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PublicReadingofEMANCIPATED

This reading is part of the Globe’s Southeastern Residency Project, a long-term program funded by the Irvine Foundation, the San Diego Foundation and Legler Benbough Foundation. Through the residency project the Globe seeks to engage with the community surrounding its new Technical Center on Market Street in the southeastern part of San Diego. The goal is to produce projects that resonate with the community through its partnership with Lincoln High School, to welcome residents to plays and events at the Globe through the Expanded Access program, to train and employ local residents with paid Technical Internships and to develop theatre by the community members themselves with Emancipated being the product of this component of the project.

Hearing the story as these young people see it is a revelation and a chilling reminder of a part of society that most people know nothing about. We hope you’ll be able to attend this very special event.
