There’s still time to get a summer job before the Career Center closes for SY 09/10. Visit the Career Center, talk to Mr Loessel and take a look at the Job Board. Students must have a 2.0 GPA to get their work permit signed by Mr Loessel either on or before Monday, June 21. The last day the Career Center will be opened is Friday, June 25.

Senior Exhibition Presentation Workshop

Beginning Wednesday, April 14 from 2:45 – 3:15 pm the Career Center will be the location of the Senior Exhibition Presentation Workshop. Mr Loessel will be the facilitator. This Workshop is open to all seniors interested in learning the step-by-step techniques of giving a dynamic 5 – 7 minute oral presentation. Students will also learn the appropriate dress and what it means to be ‘dressed for success’.

This Workshop will continue every Wednesday, at the same time and location, concluding on Wednesday, 19 May.

Seniors – Cap & Gown

Jostens will be on campus again on Tuesday, March 9th during lunch to take more Cap and Gown orders. The Cap and Gown unit itself costs $30. If students aren’t able to pay the entire amount, they are able to put down a deposit and make payments on their order. Orders placed after March 17th will have a $10 fee added. If students need a new order form and packet, there are extras available in the ASB office.

Lincoln High School Science Department Proudly Presents: 2^nd Annual- Nifty 150 Science Lecture

When: March 10^th @ 9:30am

Where: Lincoln High School Theatre

Who: FRANCISCO J. VILLARREAL, MD PhD, Professor of Medicine

Major areas of research include:

A) The effects that abnormal patterns of cardiac contraction have on myocardial inflammation and remodeling,

B) The cardioprotective effects of novel matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors (MMPi),

C) The cardioprotective actions of cocoa flavanols and,

D) The role that extracellular matrix deposition plays in the development of diastolic dysfunction in diabetic hearts.

Details on the cocoa flavanol project is as follows:

Dr. Villarreal’s laboratory has undertaken a project related to the characterization of the cardioprotective actions of cocoa flavanols on animal models of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Epidemiological studies have shown a correlation between flavonoid-rich diets and improved cardiovascular prognosis. Cocoa contains large amounts of flavonoids, in particular flavanols (mostly catechins and epicatechins). Flavonoids possess pleiotropic properties that may confer protective effects to tissues during injury. We examined the ability of epicatechin to reduce short and long-term ischemia reperfusion (IR) myocardial injury. Our results indicate that epicatechin Tx confers cardioprotection in the setting of IR injury. The effects are independent of changes in hemodynamics, are sustained over the long-term, and are accompanied by reduced levels of indicators of tissue injury. Results warrant the evaluation of cocoa flavanols as possible therapeutic agents to limit ischemic injury.

Basically… he is trying to prove the health benefits of Chocolate- It really CAN be good for you and your cardiovascular (heart) health! J

Lincoln’s Fall Honor Roll Celebration

On Thursday, February 25^th, students who have demonstrated excellence in academics and citizenship were recognized at the 1^st annual Lincoln High Honor Roll Celebration. Families and friends of the 310 Lincoln High students were honored for maintaining a 3.5 GPA through the Fall semester. The theatre was full to capacity with not just people but with the pride for significant achievement. Congratulations scholars!

Cap and Gown Orders – March 2nd and 3rd

Jostens will be back next week in the center quad at lunch to take orders for cap and gown. Tuesday March 2nd will be the for the ladies, and March 3rd will be for the gentleman. The cost is $30. If you purchased or still would like to purchase a class ring – the cap and gown will be free. If you have any questions, please see Mr. Camacho in the A.S.B. room (146) or Ms. Ramirez (469).
