<p>Please come out to the center quad today for our Famous Food Fair!  The <a href="http://lincolnhighsd.net/hornets/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Food-Fair-Menu-2012-Final.doc">Food-Fair-Menu-2012 Final</a> (which you can view by clicking on the link to the left) will be posted in the financial office and A.S.B. room. You can buy your tickets at the financial office and theatre ticket booth.  Students that are working should have official passes.  Some students will be late to 5th period because of clean up.  They should have a pass that is stamped.  Thank you for your support!</p>

<p><strong>GEAR UP Northern California Tour! Are You Ready?!</strong></p>
<p>Spend Spring Break on the road! GEAR UP will be sponsoring 20 students on a trip up the California coast to explore different colleges, majors, and cities.  This is absolutely FREE to students.  You must be a junior, have a 2.5 GPA, be registered for the SAT and plan to apply to a 4-year college or university, no N&#8217;s or U&#8217;s in citizenship, no unexcused absences or tardies, no suspensions or referrals, and must have attended several GEAR UP workshops and events.  Any Junior who is interested in the GEAR UP Northern California Tour needs to stop by the College and Career Center to pick up an applications at lunch or after school. See Ms. Medina for any questions.  Applications are due Friday March 2 2012!!!!</p>

<p>All period 4 teachers and classes will be able to help Lincoln High, who has entered the 5th Annual Teens for Jeans Campaign sponsored by Aeropostale and DoSomething.org  Bring your used jeans to school and get a coupon for a discount on a new pair of  jeans from  Aeropostale.  All jeans donated will go to either homeless teens or areas affected by natural disasters.  The school with the most jeans collected will win $5,000 and a pair of jeans for every student, plus a celebration.  Each class that collects 150 pairs of jeans will receive an ice cream celebration, as well as a prize that gets to 100 jeans (Pizza Party).  A memo was placed in your mailbox, if you did not get one, please call ext. 2146 during 4th period.  Good luck to all classes</p>

<p>This essay contest is open to all Lincoln students, grades 9-12. The essay must be a minimum of 500 words, typed and double-spaced. In the heading please include your 4th period teacher’s name and the room number.  Please write an essay in response to the following prompt<em>: Write about the accomplishment(s) of an African American. How has this African American’s accomplishments benefited the African American community and/or global society? How is this African American a role model for young African Americans today?</em> In an effort to expand your learning, please do not submit essays on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman or Rosa Parks. You may choose from any aspect of our community including advocates, doctors, teachers, inventors, lawyers, actress/actors, athletes, musicians, etc&#8230; A list of choices is available in Room 548 if you need ideas.<strong></strong> The deadline is Friday, February 10, 2011.   All submissions must be submitted to Mrs. Jackson-Hubbard, room 548 by 3:00 p.m. on February 10<sup>th</sup>. <p>The library will be closed periods 1 &#8211; 6 on Tuesday, January 31. Adults who need access to the library can enter through the textbook room door (opposite the tennis courts). <p><strong>Southeast Explorers Leadership Retreats &#8211; February to May 2012</strong></p>
<p>A series of once a month outdoor activities, that focus on cultivating leadership, raising awareness around community building and environmental concerns. This series includes trips to Julian, Mission Trails, Sunset Cliffs, rock climbing and a ropes course. <p><strong>Film Youth Voices Workshop &amp; Film Festival &#8211; February to June 2012</strong></p>
<p>A 15 week long workshop series with Media Arts Center designed for youth to create digital stories and short documentary films centered around the themes: &#8220;Who I Am&#8221; and &#8220;Where I Am From&#8221;. The workshops series will culminate in a youth film festival on June 22nd. <p><strong>Friday Movie Night Series &#8211; January to May 2012</strong></p>
<p>A five month long movie night series for high school and college age youth. There will be dinner and a movie followed by an interactive discussion. The purpose of the event is to help youth connect while providing a space to help them think critically about the images and messages present in the films they watch. <p>Lincoln students who are planning to go on the Asia trip to Japan and Korea, need to pay their deposit of $95 by January 19. After January 19, the price for this trip will increase more than $200, as well as the deposit to enroll. Please see either Ms. Profit in room 373 or Mrs. Cooper to make payments. Fundraisers will be done to help with cost, so, don&#8217;t miss out on a great opportunity because of cost.<strong></strong></p>

<p>The San Diego Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sponsors an annual Black History Essay Contest to enhance students’ knowledge of contributions made by African Americans. Monetary awards will be provided in the following categories: Grades 3-5, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12. In each category, 1st place recipients will receive $100, 2nd place recipients will receive $75, and 3rd place recipients will receive $50. The contest is open to all students in San Diego County . <p><strong>Teens for Jeans Update</strong></p>
<p>We are now excepting denim capris and shorts as part of the contest.  Here are the top three classes:</p>

<p>Please remember to call ext. 2146 at the beginning of period 4 or email dcamacho@sandi.net for a pick with the number of jeans collected &#8211; so we can bring the coupons to give to the students who donated.  The contest ends on Feb. 10 &#8211; so please continue to bring in your old or new denim jeans, shorts, or capris.  The first class to get to 100 gets a pizza party.  Every 4th period class that gets to 150 will have an ice cream social.</p>
<p><strong>Library Closed on Jan. 31</strong></p>
<p>The library will be closed periods 1 &#8211; 6 on Tuesday, January 31. Adults who need access to the library can enter through the textbook room door (opposite the tennis courts). Please don&#8217;t send students; I will be issuing textbooks and unable to help them.  The library will be open before and after school as usual.  Thank you &#8211; Ms. Denton</p>
<p><strong>Southeast Explorers Leadership Retreats &#8211; February to May 2012</strong></p>
<p>A series of once a month outdoor activities, that focus on cultivating leadership, raising awareness around community building and environmental concerns. This series includes trips to Julian, Mission Trails, Sunset Cliffs, rock climbing and a ropes course. <p><strong>Film Youth Voices Workshop &amp; Film Festival &#8211; February to June 2012</strong></p>
<p>A 15 week long workshop series with Media Arts Center designed for youth to create digital stories and short documentary films centered around the themes: &#8220;Who I Am&#8221; and &#8220;Where I Am From&#8221;. The workshops series will culminate in a youth film festival on June 22nd. <p><strong>Friday Movie Night Series &#8211; January to May 2012</strong></p>
<p>A five month long movie night series for high school and college age youth. There will be dinner and a movie followed by an interactive discussion. The purpose of the event is to help youth connect while providing a space to help them think critically about the images and messages present in the films they watch. <p>Lincoln students who are planning to go on the Asia trip to Japan and Korea, need to pay their deposit of $95 by January 19. After January 19, the price for this trip will increase more than $200, as well as the deposit to enroll. Please see either Ms. Profit in room 373 or Mrs. Cooper to make payments. Fundraisers will be done to help with cost, so, don&#8217;t miss out on a great opportunity because of cost.<strong></strong></p>

<p>All period 4 teachers and classes will be able to help Lincoln High, who has entered the 5th Annual Teens for Jeans Campaign sponsored by Aeropostale and DoSomething.org  Bring your used jeans to school and get a coupon for a discount on a new pair of  jeans from  Aeropostale.  All jeans donated will go to either homeless teens or areas affected by natural disasters.  The school with the most jeans collected will win $5,000 and a pair of jeans for every student, plus a celebration.  Each class that collects 150 pairs of jeans will receive an ice cream celebration, as well as a prize that gets to 100 jeans (Pizza Party).  A memo was placed in your mailbox, if you did not get one, please call ext. 2146 during 4th period.  Good luck to all classes</p>

How has this African American’s accomplishments benefited the African American community and/or global society? <p><strong>Financial Aid Night &#8211; Wed. Jan. 18</strong></p>
<p>Lincoln High School will be hosting a Financial Aid Night on Wednesday January 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the theater.  This event is for all seniors and their families, but all grades are welcome to attend.  Please join us in a presentation on <em><strong>Free Application for Federal Student Aid</strong></em> <strong>(FAFSA)</strong> and a detailed strategy for completing it.  The FAFSA Application is a requirement for students to be eligible for Financial Aid.  Any student who plans on enrolling in a 4-year, 2-year, or Junior College needs to attend with their parent and/or guardian.</p>
<p><strong>Letter Jacket Rep on Campus this Thursday and Friday</strong></p>
<p>Those students who have received your Varsity Letter and would like to order a Letter Jacket, the representative from San Diego Graduate Supply will be on campus this Thursday and Friday at lunch outside the ASB room to take Letter Jacket orders. Brochures and order forms can be picked up in the ASB room during lunch. A deposit of $100.00 on the Jacket is required when you order. Don’t forget to bring your letter and any other patches you want sewn on with you on Thursday and Friday.</p>
<p><strong>Food Fair Mandatory Meeting Next Week</strong></p>
<p>This Thursday, Jan. 19, during lunchtime in the A.S.B. room, all advisors and coaches (NO STUDENTS) that plan to sell at our annual food fair need to attend a lunch meeting. At this meeting we will discuss what can and can not be sold and go over logistics of selling the food.  Please make sure that if you are unable to attend and planning to sell &#8211; see me after that date, so that I can give you the form and answer any questions you may have.  Multicultural Week is from Jan. 30 to Feb. 3 &#8211; with the Food Fair taking place that Friday, Feb. 3 during lunch in the center quad.  This is a great opportunity to fundraise for your club/sport/organization.</p>

<p><strong>Career</strong><strong> Center</strong><strong> Information:</strong></p>
<p>Comienza Con Un Sueno takes place THIS Saturday, April 30 from 7:30am until 1pm at UC San Diego.  If you&#8217;re planning to go to college, but are still unsure how you can prepare, this trip will be an excellent opportunity to learn more.  Workshops will be available in English and en espanol.  Transportation IS provided &#8211; bus departs at 7:30am.  ANY Lincoln student can attend this trip.  Priority deadline is TODAY, Wednesday, April 27 by 3pm.</p>
<p>UCSD EAOP and the Kettering Foundation Public Scholars Meeting Have you considered attending a historically black college or university, also commonly known as HBCUs?  This Friday, April 29, you can meet with professors from Clark Atlanta University, Miles College, Morehouse College, Spellman College, and Tougaloo College at the Barrio Logan Library, located at 811 S. 28th Street, San Diego, CA 92113.  The event begins at 2:30pm.  Seniors who have been accepted to these respective schools, as well as all other students continuing their college planning should attend!  For more information, contact Ms. Cruz.</p>
<p>SAT Subject Test Registration</p>
<p>Juniors interested in taking the SAT II Subject test in June must sign up in the College &amp; Career Center.  You must demonstrate that the colleges you will apply to recommend or require SAT Subject Test scores.  Also, students interested in taking the SAT I for the second time must sign up in the College &amp; Career Center.  The deadline to register for the June 4 test date is on Friday, May 6.</p>
<p>College Tours to CSU Long Beach and CSU Channel Islands are set for Friday, May 13 and Friday, May 20.  This trip is for sophomores and Juniors ONLY.  Eligibility requirements: cumulative GPA of 2.5, you must perfect attendance during all 4 CST/STAR testing days, receive permission from all your teachers, and you will have to respond to a prompt.  Pick up an application today in the College &amp; Career Center! <p><strong>Circle of Friends Reminder:</strong></p>
<p>Don&#8217;t forget that Circle of Friends meets today, and every Wednesday during lunch in Room 806, Mr. Moller&#8217;s art room.  Help special needs students be included at Lincoln. Gain leadership and communication skills. Attend special activities and earn community service hours.   Your school lunch is provided each Wednesday in Room 806. Remember to bring T shirt order forms and field trip permission slips this week to the meeting or to Science and Engineering office. <p><strong>SDUSD Mental Health Resource Center: </strong></p>
<p>SDUSD Mental Health Resource Center’s Suicide Prevention Office in conjunction with Lincoln High School counseling department will offer a free suicide prevention, education, and awareness presentation in rooms 601 and 647 for parents.  It will be offered in both English and Spanish.  Gift cards will be raffled to those in attendance. <strong> </strong></p>

<p><strong>Powder Puff Update:</strong></p>
<p>Thanks for all that came out this past Saturday.  Because of the low numbers &#8211; we have made some changes:</p>
<p>1.  The game is now Seniors (12) vs. Underclassmen (9-11)</p>
<p>2.  <em><strong>Powder Puff game date scheduled for May 4<sup>th</sup> has been rescheduled.  The new date will be determined for sometime in May. The time will still be at 3:00 p.m.</strong></em></p>
<p>3.  Our practice the next two Saturdays are from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  We will meet on the Utility Field.  Parking is limited to the street and will have to get in  through the football field.  It is still not too late to sign up, see your class advisor to sign up.  You must have a current physical and permission slip and $5.</p>

<p>Lincoln High School will be hosting our second Blood Drive of the year. This will be held on May 6th, 2011 from 8:00am to 2:00pm. If you are interested in signing up, please stop by the A.S.B room (146) or come by the blood drive table in the center quad during lunch to pick up a permission slip. <p><strong>UCSD Performance Workshop &#8211; Album Project:</strong></p>
<p>The UCSD Performance Workshop starts again this Friday after school in room #501 and will meet every Friday through the end of May. The focus of this workshop is to create an album that we will release at the end of the year. Various art forms are welcome including, spoken word, visual art, rap, singing, electronica, reggaeton and rock! If you&#8217;d like to be a part of making and releasing a CD come by Mr. Nielsen&#8217;s room and check it out! (Eric Nielsen) </p>
